Deconstructing the Colonial Lens: Societal Pressures & Authentic Identity

One of the most persistent dilemmas in Pakistani society is the continuous tug-of-war between superficial Westernization on one hand and rigid cultural conservatism on the other. Both extremes, paradoxically, are deeply shaped by our colonial past.

The Double Burden on Women

In contemporary public discourse, women in our society are subjected to an exhausting gauntlet of social scrutiny. Whether it is judgment regarding attire, career pursuits, marital status, or public presence, women find themselves navigating competing standards:

• On one side, colonial inferiority complexes dictate that intellectual sophistication only exists in mimicking Western aesthetics, language, and consumerism.
• On the other side, reactionary traditionalism weaponizes cultural guilt to deny women education, financial autonomy, and their authentic legal rights granted by Islam.

Neither of these paradigms serves the truth.

Reclaiming Intellectual Confidence

As students and researchers in the Humanities, our duty is to critically deconstruct these inherited mental frameworks. We must understand that true empowerment does not come from seeking external validation from former colonizers, nor does it come from blindly defending oppressive local customs.

1. Cultivate Rigorous Reading & Humanities Literacy: Moving beyond soundbites to read history, sociology, and authentic theology.
2. Support One Another: Building networks of empathy and solidarity among young women and students to resist toxic societal judgment.
3. Speak with Clarity and Kindness: Engaging in public discourse not to tear down individuals, but to dismantle harmful ideologies and inspire positive change.
